Questions about hand baggage:

  • Please be aware that the size of most of these suitcases exceed the dimensions of a small underseat bag, in exceptional cases also the dimensions of a large piece of hand baggage (e.g., ride-on suitcases by the manufacturer Younglingz).
If the trolleys don’t align with hand baggage regulations of the booked fare and do not fit in the sizer, they have to be charged and checked in according to the standard hand baggage process.

  • All passengers are entitled to carry on board a small item of hand baggage no larger than 40 x 30 x 25 cm.

Passengers flying SMART fare additionally have a second large item of hand baggage (up to 8 kg) included in their booking. Passengers flying BIZclass fare are entitled to take two items of hand baggage (each up to 8 kg and a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 23 cm) in addition to their small item of hand baggage.

    Carrying baggage on board

Small items of hand baggage must be stored beneath the seat in front of you on board the plane. On fully booked flights, additional large items of hand baggage, weighing up to 8 kg and measuring no greater than 55 x 40 x 23 cm (or 57 x 54 x 15 cm for folding garment bags), may be checked into the hold on grounds of capacity. This service is free so long as the item of hand baggage meets all requirements. In such instances, you'll be able to collect your hand baggage in the baggage collection hall on arrival.

Charges for hand baggage exceeding size or weight restrictions

Items of baggage that exceed the size or weight restrictions listed above must be checked into the hold at the check-in counter.

Hand baggage that is too large or too heavy will be taken at the gate and charged and transported as hold baggage. Please note that these restrictions are strictly enforced during boarding. Charges for hold baggage at the gate are significantly higher and can be settled by card payment only.

This serves not only your comfort but also, and above all, your safety and that of all the passengers.

Please note that you must remove all hazardous goods, any medication, and all valuable items (such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets, documents, identity documents, and jewellery) from your hand baggage if it has to be carried in the hold.

    Please note:

All regulations apply for Eurowings flights with an EW flight number, regardless of the operating airline. For flights by our partner airlines, the regulations of the respective airline apply. These can be found on the airline's website. Our partner airlines currently include Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

  • Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, PVs, etc.) may only be carried in hand baggage. It is not permitted to carry them in checked baggage.

The use of electronic cigarettes on board the aircraft is prohibited.

  • Yes, a music instrument can always be taken into the cabin (all fares) as long as it does not exceed the dimensions of a small item of hand baggage (40 x 30 x 25 cm). If your music instrument is larger than a small item of hand baggage, you can book a large item of hand baggage (55 x 40 x 23 cm) in addition to the BASIC fare. The SMART and BIZclass fares already include the large item of hand baggage. You can check the hand baggage regulations for your fare at any time using the following link. Please remember that a music instrument that you wish to take into the cabin is counted as one item of hand baggage. If you take your music instrument with you on the BASIC fare and it is the size of a small item of hand baggage, please remember that a second item of hand baggage is not included free of charge. In order to take another item of hand baggage weighing up to 8 kg, you can book the “2 Cabin Bags & Priority boarding” service.

The following music instruments can be taken into the cabin as hand baggage, as long as they comply with the respective hand baggage rules in your booked fare: clarinets, flutes, bugles, oboes, violins, trumpets.

Larger music instruments (such as guitars) in a soft case can only be transported in the cabin on an extra seat. You can find out more about the charges for transporting large music instruments from our table of charges.

    Exception:

Double basses must be transported in a hard case and checked in as baggage. Due to their size, they may not be carried in the cabin, which is why they must be checked in as a normal item of baggage.

    Extra seat

You can book an extra seat for your cabin baggage up to 24 hours before departure from €10 per seat and routes depending on availability. Please notice that the booking of an extra seat for carrying extra hand baggage (e.g. music instrument) is only possible via the call center or at the counter.

    Note:

Eurowings accepts no liability for the transport of music instruments in the cabin. All rules apply to all Eurowings flights with an EW flight number, regardless of the operating airline. The following baggage rules apply to Eurowings Discover flights. Flights operated by our partner airlines and that therefore do not have an EW flight number are subject to the regulations of the respective airline. These can be accessed via the airline’s website. Our partner airlines currently include  Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Condor, United Airlines, Air Canada and All Nippon Airways.

  • If you have left an item on board one of our aircraft, please report this immediately upon arrival at the Eurowings baggage claim at the airport. Lost items on board will be handed over by our cabin crew to our baggage tracing department at the airport and can be collected by you there.

All lost items that have not been collected within 14 days are sent to our head office. To help us find your item as quickly as possible, please enter your loss report here. Please only fill in the form if your item is not at the baggage tracing desk at the airport. We will use your detailed description to locate this item as quickly as possible. As soon as we are successful, we will contact you to arrange its return to you.

  • For security reasons, the following items are prohibited in the cabin:

    • Toy or dummy weapons (plastic or metal)

    • Petrol lighters

    • Nail files (paper files are allowed)

    • Catapults

    • Cutlery

    • Knives with blades longer than 6 cm

    • Razor blades

    • Tools

    • Darts

    • Scissors with a blade length of more than 6 cm, measured from the pivot point

    • Syringes

    • Knitting needles

    • Sports rackets (tennis rackets and fishing rods are allowed, if they do not exceed Eurowings hand baggage regulations)

    • Billiard, snooker or pool cues

    • Skateboards, hoverboards

    • Ski and hiking poles

For departures within the EU and from many other countries, there are special conditions regulating the carrying of liquids.
For more information please click here.

Please note that different local regulations may apply at airport security checkpoints and items may not be allowed into the aircraft cabin that are not explicitly listed on the European Union's list of prohibited items. For example, tennis rackets or fishing rods may also be taken away at security checkpoints. We recommend that you check in all large items as baggage or bulky baggage at the check-in counter. Furthermore, the respective hand baggage regulations as well as the hand baggage dimensions must be taken into account.

Information on hazardous materials (e.g. electronic devices with lithium batteries, e-cigarettes) and their transport can be found here. If your device/item is not listed, please send us your query by email to service@eurowings.com.

Information on lithium-ion batteries for wheelchairs and other mobility aids can be found here under the section ‘Passengers with wheelchairs’.

  • In addition to all other hand baggage regulations, the following regulations regarding carrying liquids on aeroplanes apply for all departures within the EU and in several other countries, including Switzerland, Russia, Iceland, Croatia, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Norway:

    • All liquids (such as cosmetics and toiletries, gels, pastes, creams, lotions, mixtures of liquids and solids, perfumes, pressurised containers, cans or water bottles) and wax and gel-like products may only be carried on board in containers holding up to 100 ml or 100 g.

    • These liquids and products must be packed in a transparent, resealable and fully closed plastic bag (max. capacity 1 l). No such plastic bags are available at our check-in area so travellers must ensure they obtain one in advance, for example a freezer bag from the supermarket.

    • Prescribed medication and baby food may also be carried in hand baggage if the traveller can prove that they will be required during the flight.

    Our recommendation:

Store all liquids and gels that you will not require during your flight in your checked baggage to ensure a quicker boarding process.

Liquids from Travel Value or duty-free shops

You may purchase liquids, gels and cream products in containers greater than 100 ml tax-free at airport shops and on board if they are sealed in a security tamper evident bag (STEB) along with the receipt at the time of purchase. If purchasing items on board, please ask the flight crew to seal them for you. Please note that due to high demand there may no longer be any more STEBs on board. You may take these items onto your connecting flight in your hand baggage if the seal is left intact and the receipt is in the bag. This applies to all departures from and via EU airports, including Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. We strongly recommend getting informed about the regulations specific to the destination or transit country prior to the flight.

We assume no liability for products that are opened or confiscated during transit or when exiting the plane.

Find out more on the website of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

    Note:

Products and bags that do not comply with requirements or are not closed with a rubber band or similar must be handed over to security. Eurowings accepts no liability for any belongings brought along by passengers which must be handed over to security.

    Note USA:

The US Transport Security Administration (TSA) has amended the security regulations for flights to the USA from 30 June 2018. In addition to the existing restrictions on liquids (1 litre in total, no more than 100 ml per single container), the list of banned items has been expanded to include powders or powder-like substances. Passengers are generally no longer permitted to carry powder or powder-like substances with a total volume of more than 350 ml in their hand baggage. Powder or powder-like substances less than 350 ml in volume may also be prohibited from hand baggage if, for example, there are any doubts about the identity of the substance. For this reason, Eurowings recommends that all passengers travelling to the USA either refrain from taking powder or powder-like substances, or pack these in their checked-in baggage. There are also special local regulations at domestic airports in the USA. You should make local enquiries about these. Please also note that changes may occur, even at short notice. Please visit the TSA`s homepage for up-to-date information for the USA and special provisions for duty-free products.

Please note that there are increased security checks for all departures to the USA and you should therefore expect longer waiting times at the airport. We recommend that you arrive early at the airport. Transit passengers are kindly requested to proceed quickly to their connecting gate for their onward flight to the USA. All electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, notebooks, etc.) will have to go through a security check, but can still be taken into the cabin. Electronic devices that are in a protective case or sealed in plastic must be taken out of the protective cover or plastic during the screening process.

  • Each passenger has the right to take one small item of hand baggage whose dimensions do not exceed 40 x 30 x 25 cm. If you book the SMART fare service, you can take an additional large item of hand baggage (55 x 40 x 23 cm, max. 8 kg).

Passengers whose hand baggage exceeds the permitted dimensions (as described above, depending on date of booking) must pay an additional fee at the gate of 60 € / £51. The item of baggage will then be stored in the aircraft’s hold. This rule also applies if other hand baggage regulations are not observed (e.g. having more items than included in the fare, or an item of hand baggage that exceeds 8 kg).

Here you can find more information about hand baggage at Eurowings.
