COVID-19 tests at German and international airports

COVID-19 tests at German and international airports

It is possible to have COVID-19 tests carried out at German and international airports before departure or after arrival. These are RT-PCR tests (Reserve Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction Test) or rapid antigen tests.

  • COVID-19-test centres at German airports: See the overview.

  • COVID-19-test centres at international airports: See the overview.

  • Verified self-tests: Certain destination countries also accept verified self-tests. You can find more information here.

  • For a worry-free return flight, you can now purchase verified self-tests on your departing flight with us on board. Read more about it here (Scroll down for the English version).

You can find more information on testing obligations here.

The most important facts at a glance

  • Find out if your destination requires a specific COVID-19 test for entry and how much in advance it has to be made.

  • On flights within Germany or from non-risk areas to Germany the testing requirement does no longer apply. When returning from risk areas testing and quarantine are mandatory. More details can be found here.

  • Corona self-tests from the drugstore or pharmacies are not recognised as proof for entry or exit. If self-tests are verified by certain providers, however, they count as valid entry documents in certain countries.

  • All travellers without symptoms can get tested at the airport. If you already have symptoms, you should report to your local health office and/or visit a doctor's office that performs COVID-19 tests.

Entry into Germany with verified self-tests

Verified self-tests are accepted on flights from European countries to Germany from certain providers,e.g. covidtestONLINE or TestiFly.

Important note: Verified self-tests are not accepted in all countries and/or only for certain categories of persons. Until the day of your flight, the legal/regulatory requirements relevant for your flight (including those regarding the test regulations), in particular those of the respective country of destination, may change. Please inform yourself in good time about any changes to the legal/official requirements (including those relating to the test regulations) for entry into the destination country, cf. the Eurowings General Conditions of Carriage, Art. 13.1. Eurowings cannot accept any responsibility for this.

How verified self-tests work:

  • Buy a self-testing kit (First, check which kits are accepted by the certificate provider).

  • Make a cell phone video of your testing or make an appointment for a video call (varies by provider).

  • Medically qualified/trained personnel check the correct test procedure during the video call or via the mobile phone video uploaded on the website/app.

  • Receive your self-testing certificate online or in an app.

Find out more about the certificate provider covidtestONLINE or TestiFly.

Purchase verified self-tests on board

For a worry-free return flight, you can now also purchase verified self-tests directly on board with us on your departing flight. This avoids long waiting times at the test centres and a stressful return journey to Germany!

You can download the flyer here and find out more about our offer.

Important note about test centres at airports

Testing facilities at airports often imply long waiting times and crowds of people. Therefore, if possible, find out about alternative test centres so that you can depart at ease.

Frequently asked questions: Testing for travel

What do I need to know before getting tested?

  • A valid identity card or passport is usually required to issue the certificate. Please find out which documents are required at your destination before you start your journey.

  • The result of an antigen test is usually obtained after 15-30 minutes. A nasal or throat swab is taken by trained staff. The short waiting time makes it easier for passengers to travel in or out of the country.

  • With a PCR test, the result is evaluated in a laboratory. The notification of the result can take between 12 and 48 hours depending on which type of PCR test you have made.

  • For entry into certain countries, certain information must be included in the test certificate.

Important: Please find out which information is required by your destination ahead of your trip. The German Federal Foreign Office always provides the most up-to-date information for German residents.

Do I have to get tested when entering Germany from non-risk areas abroad?

  • Please note that from June 1st, on flights from non-risk areas to Germany and on flights within Germany, the 3G proof requirement (tested, recovered or vaccinated) will no longer apply.

Do I have to get tested when entering Germany from risk areas?

  • From 1 June 2022, passengers no longer have to show proof of being tested, vaccinated or recovered on flights from non-risk areas to Germany and on all flights within Germany.

  • When entering from virus variant areas, the testing and quarantine obligation continues to apply for all travellers without exceptions. This is also the case if you have stayed in a virus-variant area in the last 10 days. The PCR test must not be older than 48 hours when entering from virus variant areas. A 14-day quarantine period applies and no exceptions apply for immunised/vaccinated persons. In any case, the digital entry declaration must still be completed before departure.

  • On flights from Germany to foreign countries, the entry rules of the respective destination country apply. These rules may vary from country to country and vaccinations, proof of health or tests may be of different time frames. Therefore, please check applicable entry regulations of your destination country.

You can find more details on the entry regulations to Germany here.

Do I have to get tested when leaving for countries with entry restrictions?

Many countries have adjusted their entry requirements due to the Corona crisis. For example, they require prior online registration or a negative COVID-19 test. Such a test can also be carried out at some German airports before departure.

  • You can find an overview of the entry requirements of our destinations here.

  • Negative COVID-19 tests are not required on domestic flights within Germany.
