Working where others go on holiday

After a morning walk on the beach you answer a few e-mails and schedule meetings from your hotel room. After work you enjoy the last hours of sunshine and go for a swim in the sea. Sounds tempting, doesn't it?

Since Covid-19 turned the world upside down, many employees work from home and are no longer asked to go to the office. The new local independence and flexibility through working from home holds advantages especially for travel enthusiasts. So-called workations abroad, which combine work and vacation, are no longer a novelty.

  • Eurowings flies you affordably to many destinations where you can set up a nice office by the sea or in a beautiful city for a while. So why not temporarily swap your own four walls for an accommodation with a holiday feeling? With a little planning in advance, your dream of working and relaxing on the beach or somewhere else will soon come true. We therefore have summarised the most important tips for a home office abroad for you.

The best destinations for a workation

Home office at the beach: tips for planning

  1. The right destination: When travelling abroad, it is currently indispensable to know the valid entry regulations in your country. Please inform yourself about which documents and certificates you may need for your destination country. We also recommend that you clarify the following questions in advance: What is the local internet speed like? If you are planning your home office stay outside of Europe: Are there certain visa requirements in the country that must be observed in order to work there? Is there a time difference and if so, can you keep your regular working hours?

  2. The right accommodation: There are many seaside destinations that have special workation offers. For example, there are hotels that offer longer stays for home offices or coworking offices in many larger cities. Many holiday flats are also well suited for a few weeks of beach office abroad. Portugal and Spain are particularly popular with digital nomads.

  3. Talking to your employer: The most important thing is to talk to your employer to clarify any opportunities or obstacles. Working abroad is always an insurance issue. Maybe you work for an international company that has offices abroad? Good to know: If you only work for a short time in another EU country, for example 14 days, this has no effect on your social security obligation in Germany. However, you should inform your health insurance about your plans. For longer stays abroad in the EU, you should find out when you become liable for social insurance in the respective EU member state. If you are planning a stay outside of Europe, you should clarify whether a social security agreement exists between Germany and the country in question.
