Our tips for a winter trip through Scandinavia

With husky sleds to the Northern Lights in Norway

Tromsø is the perfect location for observing auroras in the far north of Norway. The ice-ocean city is located almost on the 70th parallel in the middle of the so-called Aurora Borealis oval - the best place to observe the Aurora Borealis. The wild landscape of snow-covered mountains and fjords is right outside the city gates, so you don't have to drive far to escape the city lights and admire the play of colours in the dark sky. We recommend Lake Prestvannet or the viewpoint on the local mountain, Storsteinen. For the ultimate Arctic experience north of the Arctic Circle, you can combine your aurora trip with winter activities. How about a husky sled ride or a snowshoe hike, for example? Feeling adventurous? Then book your flight to snowy Tromsø with Eurowings now.

Admire the Northern Lights from Rovaniemi in Finland

How about combining your aurora holiday in Finland with a visit to see Santa Claus? This is possible in Rovaniemi - probably the most Christmassy place in all of Europe and Santa's hometown. Up here in Finnish Lapland on the Arctic Circle, conditions for the Northern Lights are ideal from September to April. Good places to observe the colourful light spectacle with dark skies in Rovaniemi are, for example, the Arctic Garden or the local mountain Ounasvaara. These places are easy to reach on foot and offer sufficient darkness. And if you need more icy adventures after the aurora borealis night, you can go ice fishing, snowmobiling or winter swimming. And the crowning glory? A selfie with a real reindeer. Fancy a Finnish winter? Eurowings flies you quickly and affordably to the enchanted winter landscape.

A holiday in Sweden under the Aurora Borealis

If you are planning an aurora trip to Sweden, you should travel high up in the north. In Luleå or Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost city, conditions are ideal from September to March for observing the dancing light in the night sky. Abisko National Park, around 100 kilometres west of Kiruna, offers a great location for Northern Lights observation away from all the city lights. By the way: Swedish Lapland is not only a perfect destination for Northern Lights hunters. Winter sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth here. Combine your trip to the Northern Lights with many snow activities, such as snowboarding and snowshoeing in Kiruna or ice skating on the Baltic Sea followed by a barbecue in Luleå. Eurowings offers direct and affordable flights to Swedish Lapland.

Romantic Northern Lights in Iceland

Iceland is one of the best auroral destinations. The island state is located a little further below the Arctic Circle and offers ideal dark skies due to the sparse population outside the larger cities. But if you don't want to go out into the Icelandic wilderness, you can also admire the Aurora Borealis in the capital Reykjavik with a little luck. A short walk takes you to the Seltjarnarnes peninsula and the Gróttuviti lighthouse. Few people live here, so light pollution is not too bad. Combine your Northern Lights trip with a short round trip and marvel at steaming geysers, bubbling waterfalls and turquoise glaciers around Reykjavik. Fly to Iceland directly and affordably with Eurowings!

Did you know?

We have the sun to thank for the fact that we can see auroras. So-called solar storms continuously reach our Earth. The Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that intercepts the charged particles of the sun, the photons, and guides them to the polar regions. As soon as the photons hit the atmosphere, energy is generated - the aurora borealis. Important prerequisites for seeing the Northern Lights are a dark, cloudless sky and an observation site in the so-called auroral oval. Since the sky only gets really dark in the cold season, especially in the north of Scandinavia, the best time to see the aurora borealis is from October to March - a time when the sun does not rise above the horizon north of the Arctic Circle for months.
