One of the most popular attractions in Turkey is not far from the city of Kayseri (ASR): the extraordinary landscape of Cappadocia. Flying over the tuff rock formations in a hot-air balloon is a dream for many travellers. The centre of Cappadocia – Göreme – is just 70 kilometres from Kayseri Erkilet International Airport. Fascinating cave hotels, numerous restaurants and cafes and the Open Air Museum with its famous cave church await in the lively little town. Unsurprisingly, Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A hike through the Göreme valley to Çavuşin or a trip to the underground city of Derinkuyu in the region of Nevşehir are particularly enjoyable. Archaeologists suspect that the city, which extends almost 60 metres underground, was built by the Hittites.
The city of Kayseri (ASR) itself has plenty to offer too. This includes not only the tasty mantı dumplings, a kind of Turkish ravioli which the city is famous for, but also the Armenian Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator and an old castle, which can be found in the city centre. The nearby Mount Erciyes, an inactive volcano, is ideal for hiking and even skiing in winter. Fun fact: Mount Erciyes is responsible for the world-famous ignimbrite rock formations in Cappadocia.
