The Greek island of Zakynthos is the southernmost of the Ionian island chain and the third largest of the seven islands on the west coast of Greece after Corfu and Kefalonia. Like the other islands, Zakynthos was part of the Venetian Republic for a long time. The Venetians called the island Zante and gave it the nickname "Fior di Levante", which means "Flower of the East". The name makes sense, as the island, which is barely 400 km2 in size, is home to over 7000 species of flowers. Sloping sandy beaches characterise the east of the island, while the rocky west coast has many beautiful bays, most of which can only be reached by sea.

One of the island's landmarks are the hawksbill turtles, which are threatened with extinction but have been given a protected area on the southern coast. For this reason, the beaches there are closed when the turtles are laying their eggs and the nests are fenced off by volunteers. Those who can come to terms with these small restrictions will be rewarded with breathtaking sandy beaches and the most beautiful Mediterranean nature. Gerakas beach in the far south or Kalamaki in the centre of the bay are some of the highlights of the south coast. With a bit of luck, you can witness the hatching of the little turtles.
One of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Zakynthos is the "beach of the wreck", in a picturesque bay surrounded by intense blue water. The beach can only be reached by sea, but there are regular tours there. Another highlight are the many caves, some of which can be entered from the sea. The "Blue Caves" are famous and can be reached by boat from Makris Gialos beach or from the harbours of Agio Nikolaos and Cape Skinari. The caves of Keri are also popular, where experienced divers can also find underwater entrances. You can also hike through the mountains in the centre of the island or explore the history of the island in the Byzantine Museum. A relaxing holiday on Zakynthos is therefore guaranteed for all tastes.
