Varna was established long ago by Greek colonists, who called it Odessos. Yet archaeological research into more than 6,000 years of culture in Varna has shown that this city on the Black Sea was popular long before the Greeks arrived. Since then, nothing has changed: Bulgaria's second-largest city and the biggest metropolis on the Black Sea coast has far more to offer than the sand and the sea. Varna is also a hub for healing mineral springs, attracting many tourists seeking spa experiences and better health. The Romans themselves built extensive thermal baths in Varna that can be viewed even today. But fans of culture will also find plenty to enjoy: events like the Jazz Festival, a theatre festival and a puppet festival take place in the summer.

Varna boasts an exquisite park above the beach, the 'Sea Garden'. With its playgrounds and children's rowing course, the park is a highlight for holidays with kids. Among the other destinations worth visiting are a zoo, a dolphinarium and a botanical garden. For day trips in the region surrounding Varna, there is the famous Aladzha cave monastery or Balchik Palace with its huge gardens. But even a day on the beach can be action-packed: beach volleyball, surfing, diving, jet skiing, boating - you can do it all on Varna's beach. Still, enjoying the fresh sea breeze from a lounge chair, book in hand, is a possibility too.
Varna is known as a party capital among young people. Clubs and discos throughout the city are often alive with partygoers until dawn, when they throng to the beach to watch the sun rise.
