The great thing about Graz is that almost all places of interest are concentrated in its historic district, which has also been designated a World Cultural Heritage site. This means you can get to know the city on foot, discovering one winding lane or delightful square after another. Not all are as imposing as the main square with its city hall or Jakomini Square, but they are no less charming because of it. The historic district is also home to the Burg of Graz, an imperial palace built from 1438 onward by Duke Frederick V. Right next to this is the Gothic cathedral of Graz. The "Crown of the City", as the entire complex is known, also comprises the church of St Catherine, the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II and the old Jesuit university.

The area surrounding Graz will also entice you on excursions and walks. The Baroque Eggenberg castle is a popular destination for excursions, as are the Gösting fortress ruins, which attract many visitors. At almost the centre of the city is the Rettenbachklamm, where you can climb to the "Platte" alongside rushing streams. Want to learn about life long ago in Styria? Visit the Stübing open-air museum. But modern Graz is at least as exciting, as you can tell from the futuristic Kunsthaus museum and the artificial island floating in the Mur river. Both have become new landmarks of the city.
