Travellers to the United Arab Emirates will find a fascinating blend of old, Islamic tradition and opulent, fast-paced modernism. Megaprojects like the man-made islands, the tallest building and the most luxurious hotels in the world have made the UAE, especially Dubai, famous and one of the most attention-grabbing travel destinations well beyond the Arab world. The United Arab Emirates are comprised of seven autonomous emirates, each named after their capital cities: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. More than just the largest emirate in terms of area, Abu Dhabi is also the capital of the UAE.
First-rate hotels and restaurants, incredible shopping centres and amusement parks, spectacular desert landscapes and unspoilt national parks: the United Arab Emirates offer tourists all the variety they need for a relaxing, enjoyable holiday. The two most famous cities, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are also the greatest attractions. Dubai holds the record for one-of-a-kind building projects and counts as the region's entertainment hub. Abu Dhabi, on the other hand, is the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates. The remarkable landmark of the city is the Sheikh Zayad Mosque, one of the most beautiful sacred monuments of our time. Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi will soon be turned into a cluster of world-class museums housing the likes of its own Guggenheim and Louvre.
The other emirates of Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain may be less well known but are by no means less exciting as travel destinations. Sharjah, described as a city of culture and knowledge, is particularly attractive to families with its numerous opportunities for recreation. Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman, promises a more moderate climate than the west coast and the perfect conditions for snorkelling, diving and dolphin watching. The picturesque landscapes formed by the Hajar Mountains, which are particularly well viewed from the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah and the Ajman enclave of Masfoot, are a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. In Umm al-Quwain traditions such as camel racing, falconry and the construction of dhow boats are still immensely popular and promise to offer an authentic experience for visitors large and small.
